About the role
Mother tongue educators teach students in their native language and cultural background. They often work within primary and secondary education and have a pedagogical education with a focus on mother tongue instruction. Their role is to promote multilingualism and cultural understanding.Responsibilities
Mother tongue educators plan and carry out instruction in the mother tongue for students with a first language other than Swedish. They assess the students' language development and tailor the instruction to individual needs. They also collaborate with other teachers to integrate the mother tongue into the rest of the teaching.Skills and tools
Mother tongue educators need good knowledge of the language they teach, pedagogical skills, and cultural awareness. They use teaching materials in different languages and digital tools to support instruction. Empathy, patience, and the ability to motivate students are central qualities. Common competencies demanded by employers are utvecklingsarbete, vårdavdelning/mottagning and fritidshem.
