About the role
Violin makers are craftsmen specialized in the making and repairing of string instruments, primarily violins. They combine artistic skill with a deep understanding of acoustics and materials science. The education may include apprenticeship and/or studies at a craft school or musical instrument making program.Responsibilities
Violin makers create new instruments from scratch and perform meticulous repairs and restorations of older violins. They select materials, shape wooden parts, and assemble the instrument with precision. Their work also includes adjusting sound quality and playability through finely tuned adjustments.Skills and tools
Violin makers use traditional tools such as planes, saws, and chisels, as well as modern tools that may include specialized machinery for woodworking. They must have excellent hearing to assess sound quality and a strong sense of detail. Knowledge in woodworking and understanding the physics of the musical instrument is essential.
