About the role
Ship officers are responsible for navigation and management of vessels within the merchant fleet or navy. They have completed maritime education at a maritime academy or equivalent and hold a certificate of competency. Working as a ship officer requires good knowledge of seamanship and an understanding of international and national maritime regulations.Responsibilities
Ship officers are responsible for the safe navigation of the vessel, monitoring the loading and unloading, and leading the crew. They ensure that all safety and environmental regulations are followed on board. Furthermore, they are responsible for the maintenance of the ship and that documentation such as the logbook and cargo documents are kept up to date.Skills and tools
Ship officers must have good leadership qualities, be able to handle stress, and make quick decisions. They use navigation equipment such as radar, GPS, and sonar to safely navigate the ship. Knowledge in first aid, firefighting, and sea rescue are also important skills.
